During
2003, the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation
& Open Space District acquired two strategic
parcels on north Sonoma Mountain, the Jacobs Ranch
and part of the Skiles property, which could someday
link several parcels of public land on the north side
of Sonoma Mountain. See the Press Democrat's coverage of
these acquisitions.
Bonnie Mitsui, owner
of a 630-acre ranch adjacent to Lafferty Park,
covering much of the top part of Sonoma Mountain, has
offered to donate a trail easement across her ranch
to the State of California, provided the state
assists in opening Petaluma-owned Lafferty Ranch to
the public, and endeavors to connect Lafferty via her
trail to Jack London State Historic Park on the
northeastern slope of the mountain. For more,
including photos, see the Friends of Lafferty Park website.
The upper portion of Sonoma
Developmental Center has been added to Jack
London Park! SMP, and in
particular Pat Eliot, have been working
tirelessly on this for years, with crucial
assistance from Assemblymember Pat Wiggins, State
Parks Superintendent Dave Nelson and his
predecessor Bud Getty, the Sonoma County
Agricultural Preservation and Open Space
District, and others.
See SMP's press release, which includes a timeline
of events leading up to this key achievement.
